elcome to our Summer 2017 issue. We
have packed it full of useful and inspiring
information and stories.
In our feature story, Twice the Diagnosis,
Twice the Passion, we tell the story of Kimberley Ketter and
Shaun Rivers, twin sisters who were diagnosed with heart
failure in their 40s. Both nurses, they didn’t take the diagnosis
lying down. They went through the stages of grief and found
their way to acceptance. Today, they are both effective
advocates for heart disease and diabetes in their 13,000-strong church community.
In the final installment of our series, After a Heart Attack, Don’t Wait for a Second,
we share five steps you can take to prevent another heart attack. Fortunately, these
are easy things to do. Unfortunately, not enough survivors are doing them because
recurring heart attacks happen far too often. If you’re a heart attack survivor, be sure
to read about the AHA’s new My Cardiac Coach smartphone app that can help you
stay on track to reduce your risk.
High blood pressure in the lungs is different than systemic hypertension, and
the consequences can be severe. In Under Pressure: Understanding Pulmonary
Hypertension, we investigate the various types of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and
how it’s treated with Professor Vallerie McLaughlin, a leading expert in the field. We
also interviewed Monica Penaranda, a PH patient who has lived with the condition
for more than 20 years after being diagnosed as a teenager.
Cholesterol is in every human cell and is thus necessary for life. So how can it
be bad for you? In Why Cholesterol Matters, we share a primer on this blood lipid,
explaining the ins and outs of good and bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides,
so you can better understand and work with your healthcare provider to keep this
important risk factor in check.
“Life’s Simple 7,” (always my favorite column), provides information on modest
lifestyle and behavior changes that can not only help you live longer but healthier, too
— quality AND quantity. In this issue, you’ll learn about an app that can help children
grow an interest in eating right; the latest research in the timing and frequency of
meals; tracking your blood pressure; and the unhealthy nexus of smoking and
peripheral artery disease.
Be sure to visit our Heart Insight website and check out our apps for
smartphones and tablets — even your Kindle Fire! Visit the Apple App Store,
Google Play or the Amazon App Store to download the app for your favorite
devices. I am very interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions about
how we can make this magazine even better.
